Food Agility has released its Best Practice Data Policy, outlining how it will lead the way in data management for collaborative research in agtech and analytics innovation.
Chief of Ventures Camilla Roberts says the Best Practice Data Policy aims to encourage data sharing and propel innovation, while protecting the interests of those that generate data.
“Data can be a real sticking point, both in legal contracts and during the project when partners realise they’re not aligned. We want to talk about data right at the start of project development: who is contributing data, who will own the rights to different data and how data can be shared in a way that benefits everyone involved and protects partners from ethical or commercial risk. Having a clear framework and those conversations up front will pay off down the track,” says Ms Roberts.
The Best Practice Data Policy was developed in consultation with Food Agility partners and with advice from Food Agility’s Data Advisory Group. It will inform the way data is managed in Food Agility CRC and any future projects it invests in.
Ms Roberts said the policy reflected global best practice in data management and was aligned to the National Farmers’ Federation’s Australian Farm Data Code.
NFF General Manager Corporate Affairs, Charles Thomas, said "NFF and Food Agility have worked closely to align the NFF Farm Data Code with Food Agility’s Data Policy and will continue to in the regular reviews both documents will undertake to ensure best practice is upheld in Australia."
Food Agility CRC are committed to continuously improving their policy, and invite their partners to participate in this process.
“We recognise that some aspects of the Best Practice Data Policy will take time and support to implement," said Ms Roberts. "We’re really looking forward to working with partners to evolve the Policy over time so together we are world leaders in data management for collaborative research.”
