Blockchain to trace fish from catch to sale, an ‘electronic nose’ to check fish freshness and mobile temperature sensors are all on the table as part of a partnership between Food Agility and Sydney Fish Market.

Food Agility Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) today celebrated its official launch, promising to help lead the digital revolution in food production and supply.

Food Agility is a $150million+ innovation hub that is creating new digital technologies and services to benefit the Australian agrifood industry. It already has projects underway in the aquaculture, wheat and viticulture industries, working with partners across the food value chain.

Assistant Minister for Science, Jobs and Innovation, the Hon. Zed Seselja conducted the official proceedings after a tour of Sydney Fish Market.

Food Agility CEO Mike Briers said it was working closely with Sydney Fish Market on exciting projects that would harness new and existing digital technologies to transform the way it does business.

“But the most interesting thing about Sydney Fish Market from our perspective is that they are a nexus of the whole food value chain converging in one place,” said Dr Briers.

“That includes commercial fishers bringing in their fresh catch to buyers at the wholesale markets, retailers and consumers in the food stalls and hundreds of thousands of tourists.

“It represents what Food Agility is all about: finding ways to use data and digital technology across the food value chain, whether that’s improving product quality and sustainability, driving efficiency in logistics and wholesale methods or creating new experiences for consumers and tourists.”

Mr Briers also announced Professor David Lamb as Food Agility’s new Research Director. Prof Lamb is a highly regarded Australian physicist with a focus on applied optics and precision agriculture.

“We’re excited to have someone of David’s calibre on board leading our research agenda. He has been spearheading precision agriculture since the 1990s, before most people had ever heard of the term,” said Dr Briers.

“David also understands how to manage agile innovation that gets new digital technologies and services out of a research environment and into the hands of agrifood businesses fast.”
