Technology and digital innovation can drive gains in agricultural production and deliver supply chain benefits such as being able to demonstrate compliance, sustainability, food safety and quality.
But understanding what value emerging technologies can offer and how best to apply them can be challenging for producers, businesses, and industries.
This project explored the value agtech and digital innovation can deliver to five emerging industries; Ginger, Rice, Export Fodder, Hemp, and Jackfruit.
Researcher and Project Lead, Derek Baker, encountered challenges engaging with three of the five target industries for various reasons. The rice industry did not have capacity to engage in the research, the Ginger industry was reluctant to engage due to the highly protective nature of IP sharing, and the existing research portfolio and industry focus of Export Fodder meant engaging in research was not feasible.
Therefore, Derek shifted the focus to Hemp and Jackfruit. He met with and mapped the needs of producers, including the opportunities for technologies both in-use and under-development, to examine the costs and benefits for producers and actors along the supply chain.
