Love wine and data? Applications are open for an industry postgraduate scholarship exploring sustainability in viticulture. The scholarship is the first as part of a new Industry Postgraduate Program launched by the Food Agility Cooperative Research Centre at the recent Food Agility Summit 2021.
The Industry Postgraduate Program embeds postgraduate students in an agrifood or technology company to solve real business challenges that help improve the way food is produced and supplied in Australia.
Food Agility is inviting postgraduate students with an interest and experience in data analytics, artificial intelligence, or machine learning to apply for the first of these industry-based scholarships, Sustainability in Viticulture (Masters of Philosophy).
The sustainability in viticulture scholarship will see a student work within the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) and supported by leading academic supervisors from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Centre for Data Science and RMIT University.
Dr Mardi Longbottom, Manager Sustainability and Viticulture at the AWRI, sees an industry-based student program as being a huge advantage.
“Having access to student scientists who work directly with us on a research project that we have identified, builds essential knowledge for our industry. Importantly, we get to help train students who are the future of our sector, by giving them real-world experience and providing access to our networks.
For the AWRI, working with leading academics from QUT and RMIT is also a great opportunity to access world-class research in this domain.”
Food Agility Research Program Manager, Dr Mick Schaefer, said the program offered an excellent opportunity for postgraduate students to solve global and local agrifood challenges using technology and data.
“By embedding students within industry, we are training the scientists of the future to work on some of the biggest challenges facing food production and supply. With recent shocks to the supply chain, such as bushfire, flood, drought, and COVID-19, having skilled expertise has never been more important.
Through the Industry Postgraduate Program, we are building that expertise and capacity, as well as developing world-leading research in collaboration with industry and university partners.”
Students receive a scholarship stipend, and are also provided with support, mentorship and professional development training, helping students to be ‘industry-ready’ and building their career and networking opportunities.
